Low Vision is any impairment of the eyes or visual system that causes a person to have limited functional abilities. This may include a loss of ability to read standard-sized print, recognize faces, drive, or loss of ability to perform work or leisure activities. Many eye diseases can cause poor vision, or decreased peripheral vision, such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, cataracts and macular holes. Low vision can range from mild vision loss to no light perception at all.
A Low Vison Evaluation includes measurements of remaining useable vision, an extended glasses exam to determine the best prescription, and determination of the appropriate magnification needed to perform desired tasks. Helpful magnification, glare control, electronic, and daily living aids are demonstrated and prescribed. Training in the use of these devices can greatly improve the quality of life of a person with low vision.
